Today’s selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is “Nothing But Our Love” by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. off their 2010 debut EP Horse Power on Quite Scientific Records.
Detroit, Michigan band Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., comprised of Joshua Epstein and Daniel Zott, have undoubtedly surprised everyone who has heard one of their songs after first hearing their name – their music is the near polar opposite of the driving, churning, guttural rock you might expect from a Motown band with a NASCAR-related moniker. There’s no doubt that there have been more than a few rednecks who were outraged when they heard the band’s dreamy indie pop when they pressed play on a track bearing the name of one of racing’s biggest stars. The track they played that had them reviling in disgust was more than likely today’s Song of the Day, “Nothing But Our Love”, the single off of the band’s debut EP Horse Power.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. play minimalistic electronic indie music and the delicate synth and carefully chosen beats of “Nothing But Our Love” epitomize their simple and stripped-down take on electronic pop. There aren’t layers upon layers of muddled effects that are impossible to distinguish from one another, and they refrain from getting carried away with the unlimited number of options programmable music affords.
Their “less is more” approach is exemplified in the song’s vocals as well the music, which are complacent and unhurried as they sing “All we have is nothing but our love / And it’s easy.” The song’s protagonist is suspended in a dreamy bliss-filled stupor, unable to believe he’s lucky enough to have the unnamed object of the his love as he continues to sing, “And I get more than I deserve / Get more than I deserve.” Though all they have is their love, it’s more than enough for both the singer and his counterpart, just as the economically chosen beats and effects of the song are more than enough for it to be an effective and moving piece of indie pop.
