Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part of our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Each and every Friday we offer songs by local artists. Today’s selection club soccer jerseys, featured on the Midday Show with Cheryl Waters, is “Pigeons” by The Hundred in the Hands from their 2010 self-titled release from Warp Records.
The New York duo of Eleanore Everdell and Jason Friedman from Brooklyn came together playing beloved tracks for each other in a van, and decided to become a band. While inspired by 80′s disco, electropop, and dance, they aspired for a little more and worked out their own voice. Now, chilled, detached, and yet perfectly enabling and encompassing the electro pop vibe.
In “Pigeons,” there is something distant and echoing in the beats that backup Everell’s lovely, nonchalant vocals which make for a pleasant ride throughout the song. It is reminiscent of Ladytron’s Mira Aroyo and Helen Marnie, and a simpler time from 80′s electro pop combined with a melancholic aura.
Since their union where they released the first single, “Dressed in Dresden,” The Hundred in the Hands have been doling out the treats. Now we’ve got a self-titled full-length coming out next week, and The Hundred in the Hands have several tour dates under the belt with many more to come, including a show at the Crocodile here in Seattle as well as a KEXP in-studio on October 17. Right now, catch their video for today’s Song of the Day, which has really opened a dialogue about spark-vomiting, an issue that has plagued the party scene for far too long:
